A Very Special Opportunity…

Leading Sydney jeweller and Sydney-based Indigenous School Gawura are joining forces to bring you a very exciting (and rare!) opportunity to own a stunning limited edition pink diamond pendant. Read on below for more details about this very special fund raising initiative.

On Tuesday 3 May 2011, Mondial Neuman is giving pink diamond enthusiasts and serious collectors the opportunity to bid for the Argyle Pink Diamond Limited Edition O Pendant, marked #1 of only 100 released. All funds raised from the auction will go towards Sydney-based Indigenous School Gawura, an initiative that supports literacy and numeracy programs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children at St Andrew’s Cathedral School in Sydney.

To commemorate the Argyle Diamond Mine’s 25th anniversary, Argyle created 100 limited edition Argyle Pink Diamond O Pendants, each individually numbered and certified 1 to 100. The rose gold O shaped pendant is pavé set with approximately 1.3 carats of Argyle pink diamonds. As part of its allocation, Mondial Neuman has received the coveted #1 pendant of this never to be repeated series. “We are extremely honoured to have received the #1 pendant and we predict it will be in very high demand, so we decided to auction it for a greater cause,” says Michael Neuman, gemmologist and co-owner of Mondial Neuman.
“We’ve chosen to donate the entire proceeds to Gawura because we feel strongly about sharing our good fortune in having been awarded pendant #1 and are keen to do something positive for the Indigenous community. Health and education are major Indigenous issues and Gawura is a local initiative doing great work in education and worthy of more support,” says Michael.

“In 2006 Mondial Neuman created a coloured diamond jewellery range, ‘Diamond Dreaming’, in collaboration with Aboriginal designer Alison Page so we’d really like to continue and extend upon that existing foundation.”

Launched in 2007, Gawura was formed in response to the overwhelming evidence of social disadvantage among people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander origin. “The Gawura education program is not merely a scholarship; it focuses on the children’s literacy and numeracy attainment, at a level of adequacy with non-indigenous children, in a culturally sensitive environment,” says David North, Head of Gawura.

“On average, it costs more than $800,000 a year to run the Gawura schooling program for 39 students from Kindergarten to Year 12, with approximately 30% from the government, so we’re extremely grateful to Mondial Neuman for donating all of its proceeds from the auction to Gawura,” says David.

The Mondial Neuman and Gawura charity auction is supported by the likes of Dr. Larissa Behrendt, NSW Australian of the Year 2011, Professor of Law, and Director of the Jumbunna Indigenous House of Learning at the University of Technology Sydney. “Gawura is doing an amazing job helping Indigenous youth receive a quality education, which is ultimately the building block for the rest of their lives. It’s wonderful to have Mondial Neuman on board to contribute to this fantastic initiative,” says Dr. Behrendt.

Gawura is also supported by respected media personality George Negus. "Our Cockburn-Negus family - a family who instinctively, culturally and ideologically believe that indigenous and non-indigenous Australians have profound things to learn from each other - from its outset, found ourselves in support of Gawura as an exciting educational tool to this important national and personal end,” says Negus.

While some where demure and tasteful and others where over-the-top and fanciful, all these gowns were unique, one-of-a-kind creations…

Marchesa Spring/Summer 2012

I am absolutely loving the Marchesa Spring/Summer 2012 Bridal Collection. Refined, elegant and utterly feminine, the collection features a number of gowns of varying lengths, including short cocktail dresses and full bloom-skirted gowns. In true Marchesa style, ruffles were a dominant feature, as were flower motifs, and sleeves seemed to have made a slight comeback(?!) with a number of gowns featuring cap sleeves and covered shoulders. Here are a few (12!) of my favourite gowns from the new collection…

Vegetarian Soups

One thing I love about winter is yummy soup - there is nothing better than curling up with a bowl of hot soup on those cold winter days… here are two fabulous vegetarian soup recipes that I cannot wait to make!!

Italian Soup with Parmesan Croutons

• 2 tblsps olive oil
• 2 brown onions, chopped
• 2 cloves garlic, crushed
• 2 carrots, chopped
• 2 sticks celery, chopped
• 2 tsps dried Italian herbs
• 2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes
• 300g can butter beans, rinsed, drained
• 1 litre (4 cups) vegetable stock
• 1 small baguette
• Cooking oil spray
• 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese
• Fresh basil leaves, to garnish

1. Heat oil in a large saucepan. Add onions and garlic. Cook, stirring, until onions are soft. Add carrots, celery and Italian herbs. Cook, stirring, for 10 minutes.

2. Stir in tomatoes, butter beans and stock. Bring to the boil, then simmer, uncovered, for 30 minutes, or until vegetables are tender.
3. Meanwhile, trim ends from baguette. Cut baguette into 3cm cubes. Place cubes onto a baking paper-lined oven tray. Spray with cooking oil then sprinkle with parmesan.
4. Cook in a moderately hot oven (190C) for about 10 minutes, or until bread is lightly toasted and parmesan is melted.
5. Serve soup topped with parmesan croutons. Garnish with fresh basil leaves.
For freezing, cool cooked soup before transferring to a freezer container. Prepare parmesan croutons. Freeze soup and uncooked croutons for up to two months. To serve, thaw soup in the refrigerator overnight before reheating. Cook croutons before serving.

• 1 coriander sprig
• 4 corn cobs
• 30g butter
• 2 red capsicums, diced
• 1 small onion, finely chopped
• 1 small red chilli, finely chopped
• 1 tblsp plain flour
• 2 cups vegetable stock
• 1/2 cup cream
1. Trim the leaves off the coriander and finely chop the root and stems. Cut the kernels off the corn cobs.
2. Heat the butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the corn kernels, capsicum, onion and chilli and stir to coat the vegetables in the butter. Cook, covered, over low heat, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes, or until the vegetables are soft. Increase the heat to medium and add the coriander root and stem. Cook, stirring, for 30 seconds, or until fragrant. Sprinkle with the flour and stir for a further minute.
3. Remove from the heat and gradually add the vegetable stock, stirring together. Add 2 cups water and return to the heat. Bring to the boil, reduce the heat to low and simmer, covered, for 30 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender. Cool slightly.
4. Ladle about 2 cups (500 ml/16 fl c of the soup into a blender and puree until smooth. Return the puree to the soup in the saucepan, pour in the cream and gently heat until warmed through. Season to taste with salt. Sprinkle with the coriander leaves to serve.
Delicious with grilled cheese on pitta bread. Nutrition per serve: Protein 5.5g; Fat 20g; Carbohydrate 24g; Dietary Fibre 4g; Cholesterol 62mg; 1269 kJ (303 cal).

Rings featuring black diamonds are fast becoming a popular alternative to the traditional diamond engagement ring – think Mr Big's offering to Carrie in Sex and the City 2 – and I absolutely love this exquisite creation by Jan Logan. With its premium cut F/G clarity black diamond sitting atop an 18ct, diamond encrusted white gold palladium band, the Piccadilly Ring is simply divine.
